12 miles and the Return of the Lunchtime Run

Sounds like an epic movie title, am I right?

Last Sunday was my latest Bristol to Bath marathon training long run. Admittedly, I wasn’t on form, but managed to start-stop-walk-run-drag myself 12 miles from Westbury-on-Trym out past Blaise Castle to Shirehampton and back in.

I could blame a whole host of things ranging from the heat to my tiredness, but it was simply a case of ‘fail to prepare, prepare to fail’.

Except I didn’t fail as I got around the 12 miles one way or another (at least that’s what I’m telling myself ;))

But I find that if I don’t have the right conditions (it’s business time) then I don’t enjoy it or perform as well.

These, for me, are:

  • A good night’s sleep
  • Lots of carbs
  • A substantial breakfast
  • My kit out and ready (headphones, gels, water bottle, jelly babies, phone)
  • A wake up time of at least an hour before

Not a lot, but if even one is out of kilter it really messes my performance up; especially the good night’s sleep!

In addition I’m also getting back into the lunchtime run habit. This means bringing my stuff to work, running the 3.3 miles around Bedminster/the Harbourside and showering and lunching all in an hour.

I had my first one in about a year yesterday and actually felt amazing after it – a very productive afternoon was had afterward!

So I’ll continue in this vein, although normal service has somewhat interrupted the circuits session I had planned for today as I absentmindedly left my gym gear bag on a bus. Silly me.

Off to Primark for some temporary replacement kit in the meantime! The joys of being absentminded.
